Client: Let’s Go Tour Singapore
Project: Video documentary on Kampong Lorong Buangkok
Specialisations: Editing, Colour Grading, and Colour Correction

Description:
This project tells the story of Kampong Lorong Buangkok, Singapore’s last remaining kampong on the mainland, and provides viewers with a nostalgic view of this village preserved in time. While I didn’t capture the visuals, my role as the editor was to bring the raw footage to life, carefully crafting a cohesive narrative and enhancing the village’s essence through colour grading and colour correction.

The editing process focused on creating a narrative that reflects the kampong's slow, peaceful lifestyle. Scenes were chosen and arranged to show the communal spirit, traditional wooden houses, and lush greenery, emphasizing the simplicity and charm of village life amidst Singapore’s fast-paced urban environment.

Project Highlights:

  • Creating Visual Storytelling Through Editing: The video begins with a serene opening, inviting viewers to experience Kampong Lorong Buangkok’s charm as if they were stepping back in time. Each scene transitions smoothly to build a sense of tranquility, capturing moments of daily life such as residents chatting on porches, families spending time outdoors, and nature enveloping the village. Editing choices were carefully planned to preserve these peaceful moments, offering viewers a genuine glimpse into kampong life.

  • Atmospheric Colour Grading for Nostalgia: Colour grading was integral to the project, with warm, earthy tones applied to evoke the simplicity and warmth of the kampong environment. The colour palette uses natural hues that complement the wooden houses, greenery, and zinc roofs, creating an overall cohesive, inviting aesthetic that feels almost vintage, perfectly suited to the kampong’s nostalgic feel.

  • Detailed Colour Correction for Cultural and Historical Accuracy: I performed detailed colour correction to enhance the distinct features of Kampong Lorong Buangkok, such as the overhead electrical cables, traditional household items, and the village’s natural surroundings. Subtle tweaks in brightness, contrast, and saturation were applied to make these elements stand out while still blending seamlessly into the overall aesthetic. These adjustments ensure that viewers can appreciate the cultural significance of the village's unique details without losing the immersive experience.

  • Enhancing the “Kampong Spirit”: The editing choices were made to honor the “kampong spirit,” which celebrates community, tradition, and simplicity. This spirit is reflected in gentle cuts, soft fades, and carefully balanced soundscapes that combine ambient sounds of village life, adding depth and inviting viewers to experience the warmth and unity that defines this community.

This project with Let’s Go Tour Singapore was a rewarding experience, allowing me to use my skills in editing, color grading, and color correction to transform raw footage into a compelling narrative. By emphasizing the village’s heritage and timelessness, this video invites viewers to explore one of Singapore’s last cultural sanctuaries.
